Game, Set & Match for Wednesday Night Tennis. Courts 3 to 5 now freely
available for members.
After running the Wednesday Night Tennis for 10 years without break,
except for a few weeks at Christmas, we find, along with the 100 or more Club
Members who play in the very successful Night Tennis Competition, that we are
unable to continue to commit more than one night per week to tennis. So we, like
many others, have chosen our Thursday Night Competition over our Wednesday Night
social hit and will not continue to run it in 2008.
The Wednesday Night sessions have been very successful over the years. We have
had more than 100 new members join the Club through Wednesday Night Tennis, and
more than 200 members have at one time or another come along, with as many as 36
“turning up” for a hit.
Nowadays, we find that a lot of Club Members, even if they can find time for two
nights or more of tennis per week, prefer to arrange a hit for an hour or two
with their own Competition Team Members or with players of their own standard
rather than commit an entire night to the Wednesday social tennis format.
This has created a demand for more courts to be available for Members “casual”
use on Wednesday nights from 7pm onwards. As demand is not certain, it might pay
to book a court in advance for your preferred timeslot.
Accordingly, after the last Wednesday Night Tennis on 12th December 2007, courts
3~5 will now be available from 7pm for the general use of Members. The bar will
be open, and your only other expense will be for the lights on an hourly basis.

Peter Luczak at Grace Park
As a result of a prudent purchase on the Trivia Night this year, Jimmy
Dougherty enjoyed a special hit with No. 79 in the world, Peter Luczak at Grace
Park last month. It's obvious from the smiling faces that both had a
great time. Jimmy and Grace Park thank Peter for giving his time in his
busy schedule.

E1
wins Squash Premiership
In only their second year in pennant squash, the young members in our E1
squash team in the Victorian Squash Racquets Association Club Circuit have won
their first premiership. The winning team pictured after their match are (from
left to right) Lachlan Rough (No.1 and captain) Jolyeon White (No. 4) Sebastian
Sauvey (No. 2) and a very fatigued Andy Field (No. 3). Andrew Pannifex is
also a member of this team and played for most of the season but missed the
Grand Final with work commitments overseas. Jolyeon was first to play and did
very well, but unfortunately lost 2/3 and 8/10 in the fifth. Lachlan was next
and he more than evened the ledger with a 3/0 victory. Then it was Fieldy’s
turn, but he also lost in five (and the score in one of the games that he lost
was 9/10). Seb now had to win, and he did it with ease, winning the first two
games to love at which point his opponent conceded. Well done boys and we now
look forward to this team ascending through the grades, hopefully to A1 with a
bit of dedication.

In-Ground water tank saves the Club Championships
Terry Stone and Brian Gedge pulled out all stops to ensure the Club's new
In-Ground Water Tank and Pump System was ready for the long weekend's Club
championships - and it was.
What fantastic timing! On Monday at 10 a.m. as the FINALS were being played and
were scheduled, the WATER MAIN in the street BLEW UP, and the whole street
including the Club was was without water. The remaining finals, including the
Grand Finals, would have had to have been abandoned.
All Terry Stone had to do was to switch over to the Club's OWN WATER SYSTEM, and
continue as though nothing had happened.
FANTASTIC - the system has immediately shown its worth.

Conclusion
of Pennant Season
When the Grade 3 Men won their final in early September against
Wonga Park, it brought to a conclusion a magnificent pennant season for Grace
Park
With twenty-two teams entered in twenty grades in Men’s, Women’s and Veteran’s,
twelve teams reached the finals. Eight then went on to win their sections and
four teams - Ladies State Grade, Grade 3 Men and Veterans Section 1 and 3 - Won
pennants for the club.
To put this into perspective, there are 165 clubs and over 650 individual teams
competing for thirty-three flags. Therefore, Grace Park’s four wins meant it won
over 12% of all the pennants possible against the other 164 clubs. Truly a great
result, showing the depth of tennis existing throughout the Club. A special
mention must go to the two ladies Grade 7 teams on reaching the finals. With a
number of the girls only still very young, the club is indeed looking strong for
the seasons ahead.

Did you know?
Grace Park has won a minimum of one State Grade Men’s pennant
every decade for the last one hundred years (barring the 40’s where there were 6
years with no play due to the war) while the Women’s State Grade have won at
least one each decade for the last 60 years. Truly an enviable record.
